Underway CTD

  UCTD

The Oceanscience Underway CTD (UCTD)brings you the convenience of expendable probes without the recurring cost and environmental impact.

Research quality CTD measurements can be made from almost any moving vessel. The system is extremely portable, cost-effective, and environmentally safe. It's ideal for both research applications and hydrographic sound speed surveys.

  UCTD benefits

  • Continuous profiling without changing ship speed
  • Easy to use
  • Probe is fully decoupled from ship
  • Depth is measured directly with pressure sensor
  • Optional post-deployment sensor calibration
  • Cost-effective
  • Ultra-compact and portable
  • Does not interfere with other ship activities
  • Wireless data download via Bluetooth
  • No polluting or waste materials left on the sea floor

  Principle of Operation

A length of line equal to the desired cast depth is wound onto the CTD's tail spool. The probe descends vertically with nearly constant drop rate independent of ship speed. Line is spooled from both the winch and the probe tail while the ship moves away from the drop site. Profiling cycle depends on the speed of the ship and depth profile.

Typical profiling cycles examples:

  • 800 meters at 4 knots every 40 minutes
  • 500 meters at 10 knots every 30 minutes
  • 150 meters at 20 knots every 20 minutes
  • 200 meter tow-yo at 10 knots every 10 minutes (tail is not rewound between casts)
  • Static casts to over 1200 meter every 30 min
